5 Reasons Small-Business Owners Choose Monday.com
Project management is complicated, and it’s only gotten more challenging as businesses continue to go remote. Enter Monday.com, one of many project and workflow management solutions in a growing market. Like competitors Trello, Asana, and even Microsoft Excel, Monday.com can give you a variety of tools to keep your employees connected and your projects on track. But is it a good fit for you?
Monday.com’s 14-day free trial can help you find out, but so can advice from small-business owners in your same shoes. Business.org talked to business experts who, like you, need an affordable, straightforward project management solution. Check out their top five reasons for choosing Monday.com below.
Monday.com's best features
1. Low cost
“Prior to using Monday.com, we were managing our marketing calendar using spreadsheets and documents. But as our business and marketing activity have grown, using spreadsheets to keep track of activity across email, social, PR, blog, and video content became unsustainable. Monday.com gave us all of the functionality we needed at a low cost on a rolling monthly commitment.
“Monday.com lets you switch between list and calendar views of each activity, tag each activity with multiple categories, and then filter the results based on these tags. This categorization makes it much easier for me to see how much activity we’ve produced for any brand, product, and audience, and to see at a glance any gaps that need filling.
“Something I find frustrating is it's not easy to export data from Monday.com. For instance, it’s hard to export into Excel to create charts from the relevant data, or simply being able to export content titles for me to easily include in management reports.”
-David Richter, director of marketing at CIPHR
Monday.com’s free plan includes up to two team members and gives you unlimited organizational boards and documents, over 200 customizable templates, and mobile app access. Its paid plans cost a monthly user fee, and each paid plan requires a three-person commitment. For instance, the Basic plan costs $8 per user (with three required users), which means it costs a minimum of $24 a month. Month-to-month pricing is 18% higher than annual pricing, so if you can pay annually, do so—it’ll save you a good chunk of cash in the long run.
2. User-friendly interface
“Like Asana, Monday.com keeps track of tasks, visualizes progress, facilitates collaboration, raises visibility, stores documents, and does everything else a PM [project management] tool should do. Monday.com displays work progress in a single interface, eliminating the need to navigate between big-picture and granular views of project statuses. For instance, you may view projects as Gantt charts, Kanban boards, timelines, and more while navigating its interface.”
-Dean Scaduto, cofounder and chief editor of Kitchen Infinity
“We started using the Monday.com work operating system because it seemed like the best platform for cross-team collaboration. I have a lot of smaller teams that need to be on the same page at all times, so I had to find a SaaS solution that would connect all 42 of my team members and turn them into a fully collaborating entity.
“Before moving on to Monday.com, we used to rely on Trello for task organization. While it did a fine job helping us organize our day-to-day activities, things wouldn’t go well when we needed to scale a project: the boards would become a mess, with information difficult to find and team members lost in countless boards.
“Since our move to Monday.com, we've never had any issues with scaling growing projects. Most of all, I value Monday.com’s simplicity and clarity (although sometimes it's too simplistic for our needs—I'd like to see more email software integrations and more graphic visualization features).”
-Giovanni Braghieri, CEO and cofounder of MyConsultingCoach
Sage HR offers an intuitive interface that visualizes employee schedules.
- Easily receive employee requests
- View schedules across numerous timeframes
- One-click time-off approval and easy schedule templates
3. Board customization
“Monday.com is a Kanban-based project management solution at its core. Its boards are simple to customize and fun to use. For example, if you're a marketing agency, you can make a board for all of your teams, such as content production, marketing, and social media posting. In addition, you can add columns to each panel that detail all of the information needed to complete the task.
“The best part is that Monday.com features columns that are tailored to your needs, including status, date, text, numbers, persons, ratings, team, location, and others. Most notably, Monday.com offers a wide range of customization choices, allowing you to customize each board to your particular needs.”
-Tanner Arnold, president and CEO of RevelationMachinery.com
4. Amazing reporting and analytics
“In my perspective, effective project management requires accurate and timely reporting—and Monday.com allows you to measure almost anything when it comes to reporting. For example, you can see data for progress, performance, and even the number of almonds consumed by team members in a week.
“Unfortunately, there is no automated reporting available on the platform. However, Monday.com compensates for this with a remarkable capacity to provide a 360-degree view for analyzing multiple project components at a look.
“With Monday.com, there are two kinds of reporting: user-level reporting and high-level reporting. Per-user reporting gives critical metrics on a team's success. For example, if you're a sales manager, these reports can help you keep track of leads and team progress. You can also assess critical outcomes such as the amount earned, the commission received by each salesperson, and the effectiveness of each team member.
“High-level reporting, on the other hand, allows you to keep track of many projects in real time. The low-level board reporting mainly assists you in tracking task completion in great detail. You may also utilize the high-level managerial board to keep track of general information like project milestones, who is in charge of which task, and if projects are delivered on time.”
-Adam Wood, cofounder of RevenueGeeks
5. Streamlined team communication
“Monday.com’s board comments and tags let your team interact swiftly and keep all specialists informed. Even more significantly, Monday.com offers a social media-like update area. The area keeps all communications and files related to a project or assignment in one location. Centralizing communication guarantees no one misses important information. It also eliminates needless meetings and extended email threads connected with project management.”
-Ethan Howell, co-owner of Florida Environmental
