Business credit card expenses

As we’ve already said, a 0% APR (annual percentage rate) gives you a chance to save money on credit card interest―because you won’t accrue any.

But interest isn’t the only business credit card expense you’ll have, and even the best 0% intro APR period lasts only so long. So let’s make sure you know what costs to expect from a small-business credit card.

First, you’ve got fees. Some business credit cards (and personal credit cards, for that matter) charge an annual fee for use. Even if you get a card with no annual fee (which is entirely possible, as you’ll see), you may have other card fees:

  • Foreign transaction fee
  • Balance transfer fee
  • Employee card fee
  • Cash advance fee
  • Late payment fee

All those fees will start day one―even during your introductory APR period.

And as we said, that intro APR period won’t last forever. So make sure you know exactly how long yours does last, since you’ll start accruing interest immediately afterward. In most cases, you’ll end up with a variable rate, which means your interest rate can change over time.

Of course, the best practice for any business owner with a credit card is to simply pay off your credit card balance in full each month. That way, you’ll never have to worry about paying interest―even after your introductory APR ends.

The Ink Business Cash Credit Card from Chase Bank is our favorite 0% interest credit card for most business owners. (It’s also our favorite business credit card, period.)

So what makes the Ink Business Cash Credit Card top our rankings? Well, the interest rates sure help. While the Ink Business Cash Credit Card doesn’t have the longest introductory APR we’ve seen (that would be the U.S. Bank Business Platinum Card below), it does give you a full year of 0% introductory interest. And after that, you’ll get a very competitive 13.24% to 19.24% variable APR for your ongoing card use.

But that’s just one feature. We also love the Ink Business Cash Credit Card’s reward program. It gives you―you guessed it―cash back on your business purchases. You can earn up to 5% cash back (the highest reward rate we’ve found on a business credit card). Plus, the Ink Business Cash Credit Card has a generous welcome bonus, giving you the chance to earn an additional $750 (more than most cash back cards offer).

Then there’s the fact that the Ink Business Cash Credit Card doesn’t charge an annual fee or employee card fee―and has competitive fees otherwise―and we think it’s clear you’ve got yourself a top-notch small-business credit card.

We will say, though, that not every business owner will love the Ink Business Cash Credit Card. Its sky-high reward rate applies only to eligible purchases (the first $25,000 you spend on internet, phone, cable, and office supply company expenses in a year). Most purchases earn 1% (though your first $25,000 in gas and restaurant cost earn 2%). So depending on where and how you spend, you may not earn as much cash as you’d like.

Considering all the Ink Business Cash Credit Card has going for it, though―from rates to rewards―it’s still our highest scoring 0% small-business card.

Want to balance transfer your old credit card debt onto a new card? Go with the U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard®.

The U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard® is one of the few small-business cards we’ve found that offers a 0% intro APR period not just on new purchases, but also on balance transfers. (After the intro period, you’re looking at a 13.99% to 22.99% variable APR.) So when you do your balance transfer from an old card, you don’t just get a better interest rate―you get a 0% intro interest rate for a full year. (And yes, that rate does apply to new purchases too.)

You will have to pay a (normal and competitive) balance transfer fee. But the U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard® has no annual fee or employee card fee. Plus, it gives you plenty of opportunities to earn cash back, with a high rewards rate of up to 3%. As an added bonus, this card gives you a 25% cash back bonus each year―and all that’s on top of the cash welcome bonus.

So for affordable balance transfers and plenty of other credit card benefits, we recommend the U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard®.

Can’t wait to get your new business credit card? With the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card, you don’t have to.

See, American Express offers instant approval on its credit cards. So when you apply on its website, you can get an answer in just 30 seconds. (It’s not a guarantee, but if you have a high credit score, you’ll have better odds.) But several card issuers do that. American Express is the only credit card company, however, that also offers an immediate credit card number to business owners. So as soon as you’re approved, you can start using your new card.

And like the other cards we’ve discussed, the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card gives you a 0% intro APR period that lasts a whole year (followed by a 13.24% to 19.24% variable APR). Likewise, you won’t have to worry about common fees like an annual fee or employee card fee. Instead, you can just enjoy cash back rewards, including a welcome bonus with a generous timeframe. (Terms apply.)

In other words, if you want a good business card without the wait, the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card offers an excellent option.

Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express: A point-earning alternative

For business owners who like the sound of instant approval but would rather earn rewards points (that you can spend on gift cards, statement credit, and more), American Express also offers the Blue Business® Plus Credit Card.

Almost all the card details are the same as the Blue Business® Cash Card―no annual fee, instant approval and use, a one-year introductory APR (followed by the same 13.24% to 19.24% variable APR)―but the Blue Business® Plus Credit Card earns points instead of cash (including bonus points as a signup bonus).  (Terms apply to this one too.)

So either card can work great for your business―it just comes down to your preference for cash or points.

Prefer a flat rewards rate to tiered rewards? The Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card from Chase offers the best flat-rate option.

While the previous cards on this list earn different reward amounts depending on where you’re spending and how much you’ve spent, the Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card earns the same rewards rate on every purchase you make: a flat 1.5%. So though it doesn’t have the highest earning potential, it means you can earn a decent amount of cash rewards without overthinking your spending.

Plus, the Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card has most of the same perks as our other Chase card pick, the Ink Business Cash Credit Card. The Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card has the same generous cash welcome bonus (a high $750), competitive fees and ongoing APR, and so on. And of course, you get the 0% intro APR period for 12 months (and then a 13.24% to 19.24% variable APR).

For simplified spending and earning, give the Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card a go.

Does your business ever require travel and purchases outside the US? Then you should take a look at the Capital One Spark Cash Select for Business.

Most credit cards (including all the cards we’ve already discussed) charge a foreign transaction between 2% and 3% on all purchases from outside the US. Capital One Spark Cash Select for Business, however, doesn’t. It offers free foreign transactions, so you make international purchases without worrying about how the fees all add up.

Capital One Spark Cash Select for Business also gives you nine months at a 0% interest rate (with an ongoing 13.99% to 23.99% variable APR). And it earns cash rewards at a flat rate (like the Ink Business Cash Credit Card), so you don’t have to worry about timing or placing your purchases correctly. Plus, like our other top cards, Capital One Spark Cash Select for Business won’t gouge you with any annual fee or employee card fee.

Put simply, if you want a small-business credit card that works well both domestically and internationally, the Capital One Spark Cash Select for Business offers just what you need.

Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business: A miles-earning alternative

If you’re spending much time outside the country anyway, you might find yourself more interested in travel rewards than cash rewards. Fortunately, Capital One offers a miles-based version of its Spark Select card: Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business.

The two cards work pretty comparably, with the same APR (including intro APR period), fees, and so forth. Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business simply earns miles instead of cash―but still at a flat rate. And yes, you can get extra miles as part of your signup bonus.

So whether you care more about cash or miles, there’s a Spark business card from Capital One for you.

Want a great interest rate after your 0% introductory APR period ends? That’s where the Wells Fargo Business Platinum Credit Card shines.

Wells Fargo ties the interest rates on the Wells Fargo Business Platinum Credit Card to the Prime rate, which usually means its rates are a couple percentage points cheaper than the competition. Right now, for example, rights on the Wells Fargo Business Platinum Credit Card start at just 11.24%―cheaper than any other card here. So though you will still accrue interest on your card balance, the Wells Fargo Business Platinum Credit Card can at least keep those interest costs down.

You do get nine months with no interest first, though (after which you get a Prime + 7.99% to Prime + 17.99% variable APR). And you’ll earn flat-rate rewards the whole time. Wells Fargo even lets you choose between cash rewards and points rewards, so you can use the card in a way that makes more sense for your business. (Just note it earns cash at a higher rate than points.)

With no interest for nine months and low interest after that, the Wells Fargo Business Platinum Credit Card offers a great choice for business owners who want to keep interest charges down.

Want to extend your 0% introductory APR as long as possible? That’s where the U.S. Bank Business Platinum Card comes in handy.

As you may have noticed, most other 0% credit cards give you between 9 and 12 months of no interest. But the U.S. Bank Business Platinum Card takes things further by giving you 15 whole cycles―another three months beyond what other cards offer. That means you get more than a year without worrying about interest. And take note―that 0% introductory APR applies to both purchases and balance transfers. (After those 15 cycles, you’re looking at a variable APR between 11.99% and20.99%).

That said, the longer intro period has its tradeoffs. The U.S. Bank Business Platinum Card is the only card ranked here that doesn’t earn rewards―no cash, no points, no miles. So as you can guess, it also doesn’t offer a welcome bonus for new cardmembers. In other words, the Business Platinum Card works great for saving on interest, but it’s not exactly a workhorse of a credit card.

Still, the U.S. Bank Business Platinum Card has an unbeatable introductory APR period, making it a solid choice for your purchases and balance transfers.

The takeaway

Which 0% interest business credit card should you get? Most businesses should stick with the Ink Business Cash Credit Card, which offers one year with no interest, low rates after that (13.24% to 19.24% variable APR), and a cash rewards program with high rates.

If you’re interested in 0% introductory interest on balance transfers, the U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard® offers your best bet (with a 13.99% to 22.99% variable APR coming later). For business owners that need a new card like, yesterday, the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card gives you a shot at instant approval and use. The Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card keeps rewards simple with the best flat-rate rewards program. And Capital One Spark Cash Select for Business makes international spending more affordable with no foreign transaction fees.

No matter which card you get, we hope you enjoy saving on interest charges.

0% interest business credit card FAQ

Can you get a business credit card with no credit?

Yes, you can get a business credit card with no credit―but you’ll have to get a secured business credit card.

For an easy-to-get business credit card, we recommend the Wells Fargo Business Secured Credit Card. It’s a secured card, so you don’t need a good credit score to get it―just cash collateral.
