The corporate business world is highly competitive and, at times, downright cutthroat. You have to work hard and make connections if you want to make it to the top of the corporate ladder. You cannot just expect to trample over your colleagues to get there, though. An important lesson in building positive and strong business relationships is to avoid competing with your business contacts.
The last thing you want is for friction to occur because you earned the promotion and your colleague did not. There may be an opportunity both you and a colleague are going after. If, by chance, you both are in the running for the same promotion, approach it with the attitude of "may the best person win." This way the heat and intensity of competition does not sully your positive business relationship.
